Why Have High-Heel Injuries Doubled?
THE dangers of high heels have long been in the headlines,
but it seems that women are not paying attention since experts have
found that injuries caused by fashion's favourite footwear have
doubled over the past decade. The Journal of Foot and Ankle
Surgery found that in 2002, there were 7,097
heel-related injuries for women in the US, but by 2012 the annual
number had become 14,140.
So why has this happened? Heels are certainly a little
higher than they were in the early Noughties (since what was then
considered a towering heel, now looks a little stout), and perhaps
women are wearing heels more often - thanks to the rise of fast
fashion and the accessiblity of new purchases from online
retailers. But an increase in frequency doesn't single-handedly
explain the dramatic rise in injuries.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the injury rate was greatest for women
aged between 20 to 29 years, followed by those in their
thirties. Also expected, the study found that the injuries
sustained from high heels were most often "occurring as sprains and
strains to the foot and ankle".
What may surprise many, however, is the fact that the
study has found that the most common place to sustain a
high-heel-related injury is (the catwalk, a nightclub, that
treacherous walk to the cab?) none other than your own home.
