Building a Wardrobe...

wardrobeWhen it comes to building your wardrobe, you need to see what you have and what you need.

Evaluate your Closet

There are many people out there that don’t even know what they have in their closets. You need to have a look so that you know what you are working with. You may find that you only need a small addition to your wardrobe or you may find that you need a lot.
Take a notebook and write down in columns what you have. Make a column for staples that will include pencil skirts, flare skirts, denim, blouses etc. once you have made your list you can evaluate what you need and what you don’t need.

To Keep or Not to Keep

When it comes to building a wardrobe you will also need to know what you need to keep and what you should throw out. If you have certain pieces that you love then keep them.

Budget Wisely

Wardrobes are not built in a day, as it can take years to get your wardrobe to where you want it and you will constantly be updating it. You should make a 12-month plan and a budget. You also don’t need a large budget every month, you can buy just one piece every month, but that one piece will go towards creating your wardrobe.

Shopping

In order to maximize your shopping time, you need to have a good idea of what you need. You need to prioritize your pieces so that you can get them according to urgency. You can prioritize according to what you wear weekly so that you can coordinate with other pieces.

Also don’t rush out and buy as this will lead to impulse buying and regret. Rather just buy one or two pieces that you love so you stay on budget and because you love them then you are more likely to wear them a lot. This adds true value to your wardrobe.

How to Know you are in a Style Rut...

leather pantsThere are times when you figure that you have nothing to wear. Here is how you know that you have hit a style rut and how you are able to get out of them.

The Jean Go To
Jeans are a classic for everyday wear, but you should have other casual go to's.

Try swapping out your jeans for leather pants, cargo or a wool mini. You should wear these just like you would wear denim and pair them with an oversized sweater, a button down, a sweatshirt and an oxford shoe or a low heel boot.

Wearing Black All the Time
Always wearing black is a hard habit to break. You should slowly start going into colour by starting small with like a coloured accessory, a coloured bag or a coloured shoe. If you want to be a little more daring then why not try a printed silk shirt or even a printed pant.

The Uniform
At work you may always notice that you end up wearing the same thing like a shift dress, a pantsuit or a button down tucked into a pencil skirt.

When you get dressed for the office why not pull out a fancy shirt and wear it like a basic piece. A piece that has a little sparkle, a print or a risky neckline will liven up your work wear basics.

The Denim Jacket – A Style Staple You Should NEVER Ditch...

imageA denim jacket is perennial. It’s one of the most versatile and recurring trends fashion has ever seen!

Every season, the denim jacket is given a fresh twist – from boyfriend cuts and stonewash blue, to cut-outs, crops and embellishments.
The evolution of the denim jacket is a long story. It started off as a work wear item for American cowboys in 18th century. It started to have more mainstream appeal in the ‘60s thanks to Hollywood and Wild West cowboy films.
image
Denim jackets really came to the fore when they made iconic by heartthrobs like James Dean and Elvis Presley. Swoon!
image
Furthermore, the jacket has become one of most common unisex style items of today. Men may have started the trend, but women and the fashion industry picked it up and ran with it (whilst in heels obvs). The denim jacket is now a full on high-fashion item, being seen on catwalks from Burberry to Ashish!

Back on the streets and although the denim jacket was never created just to keep the cool kids warm, nowadays there isn’t an East London hipster without an oversized vintage Levi’s jacket around their shoulders or waists.

The denim jacket has continued to be a key style feature through nearly every decade! A denim jacket, distressed t-shirt and a rather dodgy haircut became the iconic image of the punk rock era.
Today, we just cant get enough of the a denim jackets dress down vibe! It continues to reinvent itself and move with the times. The style has become the canvas for new designers to doodle, print and embellish. Every fresh new take on the trend (even if you’re just covering the jacket in sequins) gives us hope that this wardrobe staple will be around for a good while longer.

Denim jackets did have a brief fashion fail in the ‘90s.
Justin and Britney stepped out looking like they’d taken a bath in some superglue and then rolled around in a denim factory…and we all hung our heads in shame. Luckily fashionistas and celebrities such as Rita Ora have learned from the mistake and are back to rocking double denim and jackets in all the right ways!
image
Pop star and hip hop artists continue to rock denim jackets with the swagger that we can only wish to emulate. Rihanna has always been a fan, continuing to give it a high fashion stamp of approval. I’m sure Rihanna would agree with me when I say that when it comes to denim jackets - hoard, invest (or just borrow your boyfriend’s). Your denim jacket may fade but its effortless chic will never be out of date or out of style.

Trends to Avoid if you are Short...

haremDo you find that some clothes just don’t fit or look right because you are short? Perhaps you are trying the wrong trends and need to make the switch.

Here are some trends that shorter women should avoid.

Harem Pants
Harem pants do look super comfy, but these will do nothing to help your figure. These pants will make you appear shorter where you actually need something that will make your legs look longer.

Thick Belts
Thick belts are a problem if you are petite as they are able to cut you in half and as these are a couple of inches wide you will actually lose those few precious inches. You should rather opt for skinny belts as these will add some style, but without you appearing smaller then you are.

Bold Prints
Large and bold prints will make you look lost and the focus is all drawn to the overpowering print instead of your small body. Rather go for a print that is a little more mellow like a small floral.

Statement Necklaces
Statement necklaces might be in fashion but they are best suited for petite women. These large necklaces can make your neck look shorter which will then make you look shorter. Go for a longer necklace as this will give the illusion that your neck is longer.

Horizontal Stripes
You will want to stay away from clothing that will make you appear wider then you are. This means that you should stay away from horizontal stripes and opt for vertical stripes instead, as these will elongate you.

Ankle Strap Shoes
The ankle strap shoe has a way of cutting your leg off which can make it look stubby. You want your leg to flow down to your shoe so that they appear longer then they are.

Drop Waist
When it comes to the drop waist many think that it will make you look taller because your torso looks longer, but this will then make your legs look shorter which is not a good thing. It is best to stay away from drop waist dresses and shirts altogether.

Accessories that Should not be Worn at Work...

work wearCertain clothing items like a tight skirt, low cut blouses and other outfits are not appropriate for work as we know, but there are also accessories that should not be worn at the workplace either.
Here are some accessories that should not be worn to work.

Super High Platform Shoes
You should avoid platforms that over ½ to ¾ inches. These types of shoes are for a night out not for work.

Glittery Jewellery
Jewellery that is glittery or is ornate rhinestone pieces is not appropriate for work. These pieces are able to give the impression that you can’t wait to leave the office and go out or you never made it home the night before.

Lace Stockings
Lace stockings should be avoided in a conservative work environment. There are some textures and patterns that are ok but the pattern should be small. Small net stockings can be ok if the work environment is more relaxed. Very lacy stockings though are just a no for work.

Loud Jewellery
Clanging bangles are a distraction for your co-workers. Stacked bracelets might be trendy but are too loud for work. If you do want to wear multiple bracelets to work then you need to choose a style that is not bangles so they are quieter.

Flip Flops
Flip flops make a noise and they are way too casual for work. Flip flops can also be dangerous in certain work environments.

Strappy Heeled Sandals
Strappy heeled sandals can be too bare for the workplace. A small peep toe is as much foot as you should show.

An Old Tote
You need to have a clean, sharp and professional bag for work is important. You should avoid old totes, beach bags and college bags. If your bag is getting worn then replace it or mend it.

Over Sized Earrings
Statement earrings can work for the office as they are a way to add colour to an outfit. You need to keep size in mind though and avoid large chandelier earrings and styles that are just too large.

Ornate Hair Clips
Professional hair clips and bands are perfect for work. You should avoid ornate clips like loud plastic styles, juvenile clips and bow clips and ties.

Piercings
You need to avoid body piercings at work especially if you are in a very corporate environment. Any piercings that are in the face are a no and should be taken out for work.
